Rye Rye: ‘Go! Pop! Bang! Eclectic Debut Finally Released

B-More rapper Rye Rye finally made her first appearance on 106 & Park to promote her debut album “Go! Pop! Bang!” She wowed the crowd with a high energy performance of her single “Boom Boom” In a Jeremy Scott Fall 2012 dress. She also took some time backstage to discuss her style and Baltimore dances styles.

Out (May 15), her long-in-the-making debut, Go! Pop! Bang! is a pop experiment complete with big name producers — Bangladesh, the Neptunes and RedOne — and guest spots from Tyga, Akon, Robyn and Porcelain Black. Mentor M.I.A. shows up on “Better Than You” and “Sunshine,” the latter of which she also produced. Thanks to its musical confections and Rye Rye’s quick-paced and sweet, soft voice, ‪Go! Pop! Bang!‬ lands somewhere in the burgeoning hip-pop/pop-rap territory, in between Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded and Santigold’s 2008 debut.

“The track I did with Pharrell — that’s almost a dub sound,” Rye says of the multifaceted percussion on “Shake Twist Drop.” “That was strictly drums and it gives you a tribal feel. Then I worked with Bangladesh, and he played the 808s on one of the tracks.”

She describes her track with Akon, “Crazy Bitch,” as “really different” for it’s more melodic hook.

“With ‘DNA,’ that’s more Euro,” she says, describing the RedOne-produced club banger. “I was just working with different people that had different sounds, and I wanted to kinda work with all of them.”

But perhaps what sets Rye Rye apart from all the other pop-rap artists out there is her uninhibited tendency to bust a move. The 21-year-old was a dancer before she pursued music. (Last year, she also ventured into acting and was cast in the remake of ‘21 Jump Street.’)

The protegé of feisty Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A. is even feistier, if you can believe it. Baltimore born-and-raised MC Rye Rye was one of the first female rappers to make a name for herself on U.S. soil since E-V-E. Yep, even before Nicki. Unfortunately, credit has been given where it’s due, and you all know how I’m a stickler for that. However, Rye Rye has handled herself like a lady, unlike many of her peers in the world of female rap. Unlike Minaj, Lil Kim, Azealia Banks, and Iggy Azalea, Rye Rye isn’t one for beefs. What with a child at home to raise and set an example for, she’s just doing her thing and making money, and certainly not letting trivial misconceptions about “who started what” get in the way.
Her long awaited debut album Go! Pop! Bang! has been preceded by many-a-single, including the highly popular “Bang” and “Sunshine,” both featuring her Tamil mentor. Unsurprisingly, the best track on Go! Pop! Bang! also features M.I.A. - “Better Than You,” which ingeniously loops slick rhymes over samples from the cheesy classic “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better.” “DNA” featuring Porcelain Black is a skip, because… well… it’s Porcelain Black, but be sure to check out “Never Will Be Mine” featuring the angelic Swedish songstress Robyn, a track released a little over a year ago that sent the music world into a tizzy.
Four out of four stars for this young Baltimore mother. And that’s without even considering her dance skills. Seriously, YouTube this chick. You will be amazed. She’s like a tiny, black, female Sonic the Hedgehog - that’s how fast her legs move.
